Clearing up the media coverage of the Sea Shepherd

The media have been covering the impending illegal Japanese whaling at length recently; since they are the media they've also been making some mistakes. Captain Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society took time to clear up some of the inaccuracies:

Key points:

  • The Sea Shepherds' direct action is non-violent. No action performed by the Sea Shepherds endangers the life of anyone on board the whaling boats.
  • The whalers are the ones breaking the law. Whaling is illegal; the Sea Shepherds enforce the law.
  • The Japanese actions - for example killing whales and ramming ships - are violent.

Joseph Roberts's Gravatar These guys are incredibly brave and they take immense risks in a vast ocean where rescue is unlikely...they take on the dangerous thugs and criminals of the whaling industry and save lives. They truly are the ALF of the ocean and our prayers go with them whenever they sail!!!

Menkit's Gravatar Not only do our prayers go with them, we can also help by becoming a member (only AUD$50 annually) purchasing merchandise (especially the CD Songs for Sea Shepherd which is a community project fundraiser), giving donations (very expensive running a campaign like this), telling all your whale-loving friends about Sea Shepherd, get active, get the word out! Don't just sit on your butt and hope and pray.
Wear your Sea Shepherd t-shirt every day proudly, become a walking advertisement. Write letters to our government telling them that it's not enough to monitor the Japanese whaling ship for 20 days - they should be there the entire whaling season - better still they should be enforcing the law, as they do with illegal fishermen. Etc! Get creative, have fun with it. Dance and sing for the whales ....

Joseph Roberts's Gravatar I completely agree, as a land based direct action activist, I well understand know the value of taking action!

I too am frustrated by those who can't be bothered to actually do something, but equally there are only so many hours in the day but some of us make the very most of them ;-)
