Governments defy public opinion to assist whale slaughter

In a blatant back flip on pre-election promises, the Australian Government is now actively assisting the Japanese to kill whales:

The Australian public should be outraged at this betrayal. It's bad enough that none of the promised action has taken place (the Government holiday ship that's supposed to be observing the kill is still in port in Australia and no legal action has commenced) but to assist the whalers is nothing short of disgusting.

It appears that a direct boycott of Japanese products is the only way the Government will get the idea, since it's clear that greed drives all Government policy (no matter which party is in power).

Here's mine which I sent yesterday. Feel free to copy, modify, write your own. If thousands of us write that will have a big impact:

Dear Minister

I am extremely baffled and dismayed to see that the Oceanic Viking has still not left port. Why has approval not even been sought? Why the delay? It's been almost a month.

Why is the Australian Government co-operating with Japan in refusing to give co-ordinates of the whalers when you find them to ngo groups like Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace? Are you on the whales' side or the whalers' side? It seems to me that you are on the whalers' side.

There is plenty of justification for the Australian government to enforce the law against illegal Japanese whaling in Antarctica. If you enforce the law against illegal fishing, why not illegal whaling? Japan is killing whales in a sanctuary which is illegal, they are killing endangered whales and they are in our territorial waters.

As for diplomacy, what about Japan's total lack of diplomacy by invading our waters and killing our whales, totally disregarding our requests? Why are they being allowed to get away with this?

For decades Australia has been making diplomatic demarches to Japan, and pleading with them at the IWC all to absolutely no avail. We elected the labour government because we felt you would be an improvement on the Howard Regime. Now it is obvious you are just as willing to break your election promises as Howard was. Where is your integrity? You are supposed to be a Christian! Japan is killing God's beautiful, magnificent creatures and you are sitting on your hands.

Why do you believe that Japan will not kill humpbacks? They lied about the southern bluefin tuna catch for 20 years and because of that the industry is finished, irreparable. They have lied for years about not killing endangered whales since DNA of such whales has been found at the Tokyo fish markets. If you do not monitor them constantly I would bet money they will kill humpbacks.

Are you being influenced by the US approval of resumption of commercial whaling by Japan? Are we a nation of wimps following in the steps of the US and Japan, or do we have the balls to do the right thing for a change?

Mr Rudd, so far I am not feeling very hopeful that you will act in the interests of the Australian people, the whale watching industry, the international community or the whales. It is apparent that you are totally controlled by Japan.

I am disgusted and ashamed of your administration.

Sincerely,
menkit Prince

Eithne Taaffe's Gravatar I am disgusted and appalled, until we the public put significant unending pressure on our governments to stop this slaughter it will continue unabated. The Australian government has put on a great act of concern and action and has deceived the good people of Australian people. Sadly my government has acted exactly as I expected them to.

Eithne
